10 Years of Thailand Neutral Internet Exchange: Building Internet Ecosystem
Prof. Dr. Kanchana Kanchanasut delivered a presentation at the JPIX User Meeting in Japan on July 26, 2023. She discussed the establishing Thailand’s first central Internet exchange point over the past decade. She also highlighted Thailand’s internet usage, which indicated an increase in the use of international internet circuits. Since internet service providers connect directly to foreign content providers to receive content while domestic traffic decreases, having a central Internet exchange point within the country has become necessary. This serves as a hub for data exchange between domestic internet service providers and foreign content providers who are increasingly placing equipment within the country. This exchange helps reduce costs associated with use of international circuits and improves internet speed.
Prof. Dr. Kanchana also emphasized the importance of collaboration among service providers to reduce issues arising from vertical integration, which can lead to redundant work. For example, having shared communication lines among different service providers can help reduce environmental pollution. This collaborative approach aims to establish a robust and sustainable domestic internet ecosystem.
Furthermore, she extended her congratulations and appreciation to BKNIX, the first central Internet exchange point in Thailand, and JPIX, the Internet exchange point in Japan, for their collaborative partnership. This collaboration underscores their commitment to developing their respective domestic internet ecosystems and expanding remote peering capabilities. By elevating the exchange experience between BKNIX and JPIX members, they aim to create new opportunities for connectivity, enhance data transmission efficiency, and provide a vital foundation for the increasingly interconnected digital future.
At the JPIX User Meeting, more than 250 domestic internet service providers from Japan participated.
